Stay in Japan (stayinjapan.jp) helps travelers find accommodation across Japan, from traditional ryokan and minshuku to modern hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and temple lodgings (shukubo). Our goal is to make it easy for you to discover the right place to stay, whether you are planning a multi-day journey through the Kii Peninsula or a weekend visit to a hot-spring town. This Privacy Policy details how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our platform.

By using Stay in Japan, you consent to the data practices described in this policy. If you disagree with any part of this policy, please stop using the website.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the data needed to help you find accommodation in Japan. Below are the types of information we may gather:

1.1 Local Storage Data

Stay in Japanuses your browser's local storage to save your accommodation preferences locally on your device. No account registration is required:

  • Bookmarked Accommodations: When you save a ryokan, hotel, hostel, or guesthouse, its identifier is stored in your browser for easy retrieval during trip planning.
  • Amenity Preferences: Filters you apply for amenities such as onsen (hot spring bath), private bathroom, Wi-Fi, English-speaking staff, or tatami rooms are remembered across sessions.
  • Accommodation Search History: Recent searches by area, accommodation type, price range, or guest capacity are cached locally for quick re-access.
  • Price Range Settings: Your preferred budget range (budget, mid-range, luxury) is stored locally so search results reflect your spending expectations.
  • Accommodation Type Preferences: Your preferred lodging styles (ryokan, business hotel, capsule hotel, vacation rental, temple stay) are saved for consistent filtering.

1.2 Usage Data

Standard technical information is collected automatically during your visit:

  • IP address and approximate geographic location
  • Browser type, version, and language
  • Device type and operating system
  • Accommodation pages viewed, including property details, photo galleries, and amenity lists
  • Time spent browsing accommodation listings, area guides, and price comparisons
  • Referral source that led you to Stay in Japan

1.3 Map and Location Data

Stay in Japan features interactive maps to help you visualize accommodation locations relative to train stations, attractions, and city centers. If you grant browser-level location permission, your approximate coordinates are shared with our mapping provider to show lodgings near you. We do not store your precise location on our servers.

1.4 External Booking Links

Stay in Japanmay include links to external booking platforms where you can reserve accommodation. When you click such a link, you leave our website and are subject to that platform's privacy policy. We do not receive your booking details, payment information, or personal data from these third-party booking services.

1.5 User-Provided Data

If you contact us to report incorrect accommodation details, suggest a property for inclusion, or ask about lodging in a particular area, we collect the information you voluntarily provide, such as your email address and message content.

Stay in Japan employs the following storage technologies:

  • Analytics Cookies: Google Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors interact with accommodation listings, amenity filters, and area selections. These expire after 2 years of inactivity.
  • Local Storage — Bookmarks: Saved accommodations (ryokan, hotels, hostels) are stored in browser local storage by property ID. Data persists until you clear it.
  • Local Storage — Amenity Filters: Your preferred amenities (onsen, English support, private bath, breakfast included) and accommodation types are saved locally.

However, the website itself is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from individuals under 16. If a parent or guardian believes their child has provided us with personal information, please contact info@stayinjapan.jp for immediate removal.
